Scaling And Polishing

Scaling And Polishing

Scaling and polishing are important dental procedures that are typically performed by dental hygienists or dentists to maintain oral health. Here’s what each procedure involves:

1 – Scaling:

Process : The dental professional will scale each tooth meticulously, targeting both the visible parts of the teeth and the areas along the gumline. It may involve both manual scraping and ultrasonic scalers that use vibrations and water to dislodge and remove plaque and tartar.

Benefits : Scaling helps prevent gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) by removing the bacteria that contribute to inflammation and infection of the gums. It also prepares the teeth for polishing.

2 – Polishing :

Process : The polishing paste is applied to the teeth and the prophy cup is used to polish each tooth surface. The dentist or hygienist will move the cup over the teeth, ensuring that all surfaces are polished evenly.

Benefits : Polishing leaves the teeth with a smooth and shiny surface, which not only improves the appearance of the teeth but also makes it harder for plaque to accumulate.
